Manager Mechanical/Piping Design

Job Description:

The Manager of Mechanical/Piping Design is responsible for leading a team of 5-10 drafters with the objective of consistently delivering high quality shop floor production drawings and packages in a timely manner.  Production packages will adhere to a company standard format to facilitate shop floor quality and efficiency, but will be created from a myriad of client specific formats, specifications, applicable codes, industries and designs.  Position requires the active management and work skill enrichment of the direct reports as well as daily interaction with the Director of Projects and Estimating and the Project Management and Production groups.   

Primary responsibilities will include but are not be limited to:

• Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of Drafting, Design and Piping engineering personnel (5-10 person team)
• Provides technical/expert leadership to drafting team and ensures technical quality and design integrity is maintained with respective client/company specifications and applicable industry codes.
• Reviews and approves the use of key calculations, design documents, supplier drawings, data, material specifications, etc
• Accountable for check and back check of drawings produced by drafting.
• Manage company CAD standards and client specific piping, valve, support, coating and equipment specifications
• Recognizes and communicates scope and design changes and conflicts promptly.
• Maintains internal relationships and provides interoffice execution and support.
• Must be able to meet deadlines and work overtime as needed to complete the job

Education, Experience and Skills

The successful candidate will possess the following:

• Associate Degree in a technical discipline or equivalent, highly preferred but not required.
• Accredited Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering is highly valued, but not required.
• 1-3 years of 2D and/or 3D drafting software (AutoCAD, CADWorx, Navisworks, etc) experience in heavy industrial projects
• Knowledge of process and utility piping specifications and codes as they apply to petrochemical, refining, pharmaceutical, or power plant construction projects (API, ASTM, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ASME B31.8, DOT, OSHA, CFR Title 49 Part 192, etc.)
• Familiarity with piping drafting/design tasks including routing of pipe, determining location of pipe supports, field weld locations and creation of Shop drawings necessary for the fabrication and installation of piping systems.
• Ability to read and interpret piping drawings and technical data from third party vendors.
• Competent in understanding and updating P&ID’s, Isometric and spool drawings
• Strong technical, written, and verbal skills with a strong customer service attitude
• Thorough understanding and efficiency with standard design and drafting practices
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail abilities.
• Strong multitasking and organizational abilities focused on efficiency, timely delivery and accuracy.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

May be required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands or arms, speak and hear. They may occasionally be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision. Office environment where noise level is moderate and temperature/humidity is controlled. Overtime may at times be required.
